Which Is The Best Blu-Ray Player?
5. Sony UBP-X700
Best Budget Blu-Ray Player
With Blu-ray discs becoming a popular choice for avid movie watchers, different companies have manufactured their own iterations with different features, performance, and prices. The budget option on this list is the Sony UBP-X700, which provides great picture performance, SACD disc playback, it has tons of 4K video streaming services, Super Audio CD playback, and thanks to its new firmware update it also supports Dolby Vision, what more can you seek from a budget priced product.
In the design of the Sony UBP-X700, Sony has cut some corners to keep the price as low as possible, firstly the device is not built like a tank, a build quality that its predecessor had. It has an angled rectangular body made from plastic mostly, it is slightly narrower than most Blu-ray players, and weighs just 1400grams. It has a two-tone black and dark gray finish, with no frills, and almost no controls except the power and eject buttons. When you press the eject button the front panel drops down and the tray comes out of it.
Connectivity-wise, the Sony UBP-X700 has a USB port on the front, and on the rear, it has two HDMI outputs, one of which is 2.0 with HDCP 2.2 support, and the other one is HDMI 1.4 for those with dated models. You can also find the coaxial digital output and an ethernet port, but no analog outputs, the device has built-in WiFi but no Bluetooth support though. The remote of the device was surprisingly well made with tons of convenient buttons and functions.
The Sony UBP-X700 supports tons of formats such as 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, with the CD, DVD, Blu-ray, and 3D Blu-ray. I fell in love with the upscaling of this player as it was able to every last detail from lower quality disc formats, the player also supports 4K, HDR10 and an impressively wide color gamut. With the addition of Dolby Vision, the HDR support uses dynamic metadata to change the formats peak brightness from scene to scene, to provide the best experience.
Despite being a budget product, I was particularly impressed with the overall performance of the Sony UBP-X700, and I think its a great player and deserves its spot in this best blu-ray players list.
4. Samsung BD-J7500
Best For The Money
The Samsung BD-J7500 Blu-ray player is a lot more than what its name and title implies, it can stream video, music, and photos from other DLNA devices on your home network, watch your shows on the TV, and view everything on your smartphone on the TV, if you want this upgrades on your TV, but don’t want to buy a high-end TV, the Samsung BD-J7500 provides those features without breaking the bank. This Blu-ray player justifies every cent of its price, and you will be pleased with its performance.
Design wise the Samsung BD-J7500 looks very attractive, thank the brushed aluminum looking gray sleeve that encircles the middle of the glossy black body of the device. It is not as flashy as the last years model, but I think it looks better to promote that minimalist and understated looks, very classy touch that puts it above and beyond. The player has very slim dimensions despite having that sleeve, it measures just 46mm high and 201mm deep, and has a quality build, as expected from Samsung, despite having a plastic casing. There are touch-sensitive controls that are located on the top front edge, and also where you can find the disc tray and the USB port.
Connectivity wise the options are rich, with two HDMI ports, one of which offers you to connect the HD audio to the receiver independently, a set of 7.1 analog outputs, optical digital output, and Ethernet port.
The Samsung BD-J7500 can play 3D Blu-ray discs with 4K upscaling, and you can even upscale DVDs to 1080p, it also supports 7.1-channel Dolby True HD and DTS HD Master Audio soundtracks. It also has online functionalities, like WiFi connection with 5GHz or 2.4GHz frequency for seamless and smooth streaming.
This player delivers excellent, cinematic Blu-ray images, without any motion tracking and artifact issues. The overall image was crisp due to the amazing detail retrieval, great contrast, shading and color blending. Also, the color range was very rich and the colors were popping. The 3D discs also were very smooth without any motion blur and ghosting.
If you want to get the most out of your money, the Samsung BD-J7500 is a perfect choice.
3. Sony UBP-X800M2

The Sony UBP-X800M2 was released not so long ago in 2019, and I’ve been testing the device for a while, and I was impressed with the quality, performance, and features of the product. It provides Dolby Vision and HDR10 support for excellent detail and precision, high-resolution audio with Dolby Atmos and DSee HX, anti-vibration construction for a clean sound, to name a few. In total the device weighs 8 pounds, making it one of the heaviest of blue players. The device has an elegant design that is understated, with a mix of rough matte black and smooth gloss finish, you can find the Sony logo on the front left corner on a panel that when the eject button is pressed it opens down and the disc tray slides out.
The remote control is also excellent and I really liked its design, as it blended with the overall vibe of this Blu-ray player, it is rectangular and slightly larger with all the needed buttons and was very practical and convenient. On the device itself, you will find just two buttons, the power, and the eject button. Connectivity-wise there is not a lot, but it is enough for a Blu-ray player.
The Sony UBP-X800M2 is a Smart device, that you can connect to the internet to get the advantage of multiple streaming services, and Youtube as well. This device can play content up to the 3840x2160p resolution, and performs excellent 4K upscaling at 60 frames per second and offers the extraordinary 12-bit color and 24p True Cinema for a perfect cinematic experience if you are into that like me. Throughout testing, watching movies and playing music through the device I encountered no issues, and the quality of the content was delicious, a superb Blu-ray player.

1. OPPO UDP-203
On top of our list, we have a Blu-ray player from the Chinese electronics giant OPPO, the UDP-203 which can be easily considered as one of the best blu-ray players the world has ever seen. If you want the best quality picture for your home cinema than you most likely won’t settle for the mediocre quality of online streaming services. Cinema enthusiasts are delighted with the Ultra High-Definition Blu-ray, because it provides is the closest you can get to the cinema-quality from your home, and if you combine the OPPO UDP-203 with a UHD 4K TV and high-resolution audio soundbar with a 7.1 surround system, you have hit the home theater peak.
The design of OPPO Blu-ray players has not changed since its first model in 2009, they have not wandered far from the look of the legacy model. While the competitors have chosen to go with slimmer and lighter models, the OPPO UDP-203 is a large boxy rectangular device, but I like the old-school look as it wakes up the nostalgic feelings. On the front of the device, there is a brushed aluminum panel which has some playback controls, a blue LED display, a USB port, and the disc tray. The device itself measures 17-inches wide and a little taller than 3-inches, but the quality of the build is superb.
If you are a fan of online streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, or HBO, then you will be disappointed because the OPPO UDP-203 doesn’t feature those kinds of services.
The OPPO UDP-203 can play from every format you can think of and that can be found in a household, it supports High Dynamic Range and Wide Color Gamut, and the HDR converter for standard televisions. As for audio files, the OPPO can play tons of formats such as WAV, ALAC, APE, DSD, and FLAC. Connectivity-wise you have everything that you may need for and a lot more.
The video performance of this Blu-ray player was over the top, the colors were excellent and the details were the sharpest, I was extremely delighted with shadows and highlights, also the skin tones looked rather perfect, and I could go on and on about the breathtaking image from the OPPO UDP-203.
The OPPO UDP-203 sets up a new standard for Blu-ray players, the absolute best unit.
