Espresso machines are one of the best investments you can make, the point with an espresso machine is that not only you will drink freshly brewed espresso in your house every day, but it is also extremely cost-efficient and you will realize in no time that you will save a lot of money, and the machine will essentially pay for itself. Of course, there are machines for every budget and if you are on a tight one I would recommend the De’Longhi BAR32 Retro. This machine may be a little old compared to other machines, however, it delivers excellent value for its price, makes great espresso, looks good on the countertop and will deliver some impressive features to your house. Without further ado, let’s take a closer look.

In the design department, the De’Longhi BAR32 Retro looks like a cleverly designed machine, rocking a retro vintage design of the 50s like its name suggests, giving a cozy vibe to your kitchen, unique in every aspect. On top of that it will fit in into most kitchen styles from contemporary to more of antique designs, thanks to its black and silver colors on the body, it will complement every design without a problem. It is also pretty lightweight and compact measuring just 10.6×8.7×12-inches in total and will fit right under countertops and thanks to its 9-pound weight you can transport it around the kitchen easily.

The De’Longhi BAR32 Retro comes with a dual filter and a pair of thermostats to make sure that both the water that comes from the portafilter and the steam from the steam wand are in the correct temperature. The boiler is a stainless steel 180ml one that can heat enough water for three espressos quickly so you don’t have to take long pauses in-between brews. The most important part of this machine is its 15-bar pump developed by ULKA, which separates from other cheap and affordable espresso machines, on top of that it also has a reliable copper valve that keeps the steam inside the boiler when not in use.

In terms of taste and quality of the espresso, the De’Longhi BAR32 Retro delivers plenty of desirable qualities, as it delivers an authentic espresso taste that will please your taste buds. While the temperature may be a little lacking compared to high-end espresso machines it is great for its price. In addition to that, the steam wand frothed and steamed the milk properly and I don’t have any complaints about it.

4. Nespresso by De’Longhi EN80BAE

Next up we have a little untraditional option, a pod machine that delivers a traditional and authentic espresso taste, the Nespresso by De’Longhi EN80BAE or simply the Nespresso Inissia. This machine delivers the best quality espresso you can find in this taste, with Nespresso’s delicious pods and 19-bar pump pressure. It comes with amazing design, compact dimensions, extreme ease of use, no maintenance, super-fast healing time, and if you buy it from the link below it comes bundled with the Aeroccino milk frother which froths it perfectly.

First off I have to mention that the Nespresso Inissia is a pretty compact device that measures about 12.6×4.7×9-inches in total, so it will be a perfect fit for apartment kitchens. I should also state that this device is very attractive with its black metallic finished plastic with the Nespresso engraving on the right side. On the front, you will spot a stainless steel panel and the drip tray, the overall shape of the machine is perfect and will please even the most nitpicky buyers. On the rear of the device, you will spot the transparent water reservoir that has a capacity of 700ml that is enough for the machine. On the front, you will also see a handle that when raised reveals the pod compartment and the bin for used pods, simply excellent and ultra-convenient.

In terms of ease of use, the Nespresso Inissia is fool-proof, as you have to fill your water reservoir turn on the device, place your pod inside, and press one of the two buttons, Lungo or Espresso. After that, the machine will brew your drink in no time, and it also gets pretty hot pretty quickly, one of my favorite features of this device. What amazed me the most was that the aforementioned drip tray can be lifted to accommodate larger cups, and it is removable and dishwasher safe.

The Nespresso Inissia works via a 19-bar pump pressure engine that is responsible for pumping out the amazing espresso, with the perfect amount of crema and consistency for ages. It delivered perfect results every time, with no signs of burning or acidity. Thanks to the addition of the Aeroccino milk frother you can also achieve perfect cappuccinos and lattes with this machine.

For those that want an excellent espresso with not a lot of experimenting, the Nespresso Inissia is the perfect machine, developed by De’Longhi.

3. Delonghi EC680M DEDICA

Best Value

Our Ratings:

We have another De’Longhi machine on this list, and in my opinion, this one is the best mid-range semi-automatic espresso machine in the market, the EC680M Dedica. The Delonghi Dedica comes with extra small dimensions, but barista grade performance thanks to its excellent pump pressure functionality, on top of that it is very easy to use, and you can also use capsules or pods with this machine, delivering plenty of versatility in the process. This machine delivers one of the best espresso’s in the market, without raising the prices a lot, it is a must consider when it comes to espresso machines.

As a first impression, I can comfortably say that the Delonghi Dedica has a non-traditional design, as it is more of a contemporary machine with its compact footprint and interesting but attractive shape. I was a little skeptical about the shape and the placement of controls, but they worked like a charm, for example, the control for the steam wand is placed on the side, and the chrome strip on top of the device will bring you the other controls including the single shot, double shot, and the steam button options. The power button is also located on the side of the device and its compact measurements and lightweight body make this one a dream come true.

While you might think that cosmetics are good, wait until you see the power and performance of this machine. While the brewing process is not exactly fool-proof and it requires some learning curve it will deliver amazing quality espresso. The whole process starts with selecting the right filter, depending on the desired number of cups, single or double, and then measuring the grounds coffee with the spoon and then tamp it properly. Then just place the handle in the group head and press the button depending on your filter, to start the brewing process. The steam wand worked wonders, and you could also clean it properly with just a simple wipe after each use.

At its price range I have tried a lot of espresso machines that delver good espresso, however, the Delonghi Dedica was the most capable of them all, since it could deliver amazing espresso with tons of crema and flavor. While it is not as easy to brew the perfect shot, coupled with a nice grinder and a little time you can achieve marvelous results.

2. Breville the Barista Express

Best Bean-To-Cup

Our Ratings:

Nearing to the top of the list we have the Breville the Barista Express which is one of the most convenient and most powerful machines in the market since it has a built-in burr grinder that makes this one perfect for those that want an all-in-one machine. On top of that this machine has amazing functionality and will deliver perfect quality espresso. It also has an amazing construction and nice design that will fit right in and be by your side for a long time.

The Breville the Barista Express is a bean-to-cup machine, and as a proper one it is very easy to use, but of course, you will have to take a slight learning curve if you have no experience with espresso machines. However, the most important part is that it gives you plenty of freedom since it is a semi-automatic machine that will allow you to brew your drinks to your preference. The Breville the Barista Express has a stainless steel chassis and it measures about 16×13.5×12.5-inches in total so it isn’t the most compact option, but you have to understand that it has a built-in burr grinder inside, but it is not difficult to find a good place for the machine at all.

My favorite feature and the major selling point of the Breville the Barista Express, in my opinion, is its heat exchange system that allows you to steam milk and brew espresso simultaneously. While there are a lot of machines that can do this, this one does it without loss of pressure and maintains a consistent temperature. The burr-grinder of this machine is also extremely consistent and allows you to achieve perfectly fine grounds for quality espresso and it has 18 settings at that.

In terms of quality of the drinks, I was extremely impressed with the Breville the Barista Express, since it delivered some excellent results, as it delivered excellent espresso every time with delicious crema and perfect extraction, the steam wand was also extremely functional and it delivered great results. The device is very durable as well and super easy to maintain, the cleaning was super easy as well, thanks to the cleaning kit that comes with the device and the video that the company has made for the process.

1. Rancilio Silvia

Best Overall

Our Ratings:

Durability

On top of the list, we have another Italian machine, from Rancilio, Silvia. This machine was designed and introduced 20 years ago but the latest version of this machine is the most refined one in the lineup, and albeit a little expensive, if you want great espresso for your home it is a must, coming with a great performance, amazing durability, and great form factor. Let’s take a quick look.

The Rancilio Silvia has more of an industrial design compared to other home-grade machines, but it is extremely polished and refined. It has a silver finish on its stainless-steel body delivering a nice fusion between retro vintage and contemporary vibes, and it looks like it is ready to get its hands dirty. It is pretty compact though, measuring 9.2×11.4×13.3-inches making it adequate for home use, but it weighs about thirty pounds thanks to its premium components, so it is not as easily portable.

The biggest advantage and the selling point of the Rancilio Silvia is its single copper insulated boiler that is pretty old-school in terms of function, but it delivers reliability and consistency at the same time. On top of that, it has a 3-way solenoid valve that takes away excess pressure and moisture after you brew your coffee and froth your milk.

The performance of this machine is amazing since it is constructed from the best materials around and designed in the best possible way. While it is not as easy to use as a super-automatic or a pod machine, and you will have to undertake a learning curve this machine will deliver the best performance for home use and you will be definitely pleased with its performance.

While its price may deter some, if you have more of a relaxed budget and want a machine that will last a lifetime, the Rancilio Silvia is your best bet.
