Which Is The Best Mesh Router?

5. Samsung SmartThings

Best Entry-Level

Mesh WiFi systems are becoming more and more attractive as most of us demand high-speed internet from every corner of our houses, offices, and workplaces. There are plenty of options in the market, from different manufacturers offering interesting choices with various prices, one of the best options is to go with an entry-level system to see if the system is good for you, as Samsung offers a perfect option in this segment, with the SmartThings.

The Samsung SmartThings offers some good set of features, such as its smartphone app that controls everything, automatic processes, and it is extremely easy to set up. Let’s take a closer look.

The new Samsung SmartThings has an Ethernet port for direct connection without needing any other router, but you also can connect it with your router via WiFi, so it is easier to find a suitable location for the device in your house. However, this model lacks a battery backup, meaning that if its battery runs out, none of your smart home devices probably won’t work.

This mesh system contains three routers, delivering a pretty large range, however, you can add up to 32 devices, for large offices for example that need excellent WiFi coverage. One thing that bothered me was that if you upgrade from the older model you have to transfer all your smart home devices manually to the new hub, and if you have lots of devices it will take a long time.

The biggest selling point of the Samsung SmartThings is its amazing smartphone app that is now upgraded and delivers everything perfectly. The interface is very clean now and pretty easy to use so you get the best smart home experience in the market, as you can control all your devices from a single app, for example, you can group devices into rooms, and the Samsung SmartThings is compatible with a long list of smart devices and can work hand to hand with Alexa or Google Assistant.

With its excellent WiFi coverage supporting very high speeds the Samsung SmartThings is definitely one of the best mesh routers in the market.

4. Netgear Orbi RBK50

Best For Large Homes

Our Ratings:

As I mentioned earlier mesh routers come in different variations, that are dedicated for different tasks, however, if you want the most powerful and the fastest router in the market with the largest coverage look no further because the Netgear Orbi RBK50 is your best bet. It is the perfect mesh router system for larger homes, with its easy setup and mighty power, and it two-pack starter kit can cover an area of about 5000 square feet and you can upgrade it for further coverage with extra routers, however, it is worth mentioning that the system has a hefty asking price.

Unlike other mesh systems having small devices that are easy to store and hide in plain sight, the Netgear Orbi RBK50 has an oval big body measuring 8.9×6.7×3.1-inches in total which is pretty big, but it looks good with its glossy white plastic body and the color-coded LED that glows blue when everything is working properly, white when you are starting the device, amber if your connection gets weaker, and magenta when you have no connection.

Getting into the technical bits, the device transmits WiFi data through three various radio frequency bands, there are two main bands delivering 2.4GHz and 5GHz radios. However, to make things even more powerful the system uses another radio a 5GHz 1.7Gbps one that is used solely for backhauling data from the router to the unit back to the router, making it the most capable of devices in the market. On top of that, the setup uses six high-performance antennas that are amplified around the perimeter, to deliver a secure and strong connection.

Even though both the router and the satellite look the same, they cannot be swapped, and each router can support up to 3 satellites, but there is no satellite to satellite communication yet, instead, each satellite has to be directed to the hub first then to the other satellite.

Compared to most other commercially available mesh systems the Netgear Orbi RBK50 delivered a mighty performance at further distances, topping its competitors by a margin, meaning that even though there are other systems, for pure power nothing can top Netgear Orbi RBK50.

3. TP-Link Deco M9 Plus

Best For Smart Home

Our Ratings:

If your router struggles to cover all your house with stable WiFi connection, it is wise to invest into a WiFi mesh system, and with today’s smart homes requiring great coverage, with good speeds in every corner of your home it is intuitive to do so. One of the best options for your smart home system is the TP-Link Deco M9 Plus, coming in with two units covering a space of about 4000 square foot comfortably, thanks to its eight antennas per unit and the support for a 5GHz wireless channel. For smart homes it has support for ZigBee HA 1.2 and Amazon Alexa control with the IFTTT system, to name a few.

Design-wise the new TP-Link Deco M9 Plus resembles the design of its predecessor, which sported an excellent minimal design with clean lines, however, they are a little bigger than them.

However, I am pleased with the added heft, because they feel more substantial and you definitely can’t accidentally push them to the ground, while adding to its durability at the same time. I am pleased with the design that these units rock and they will fit right in with your home. On top of the device, there is a single LED light indicator for the status of the device.

Installing and the initial setup of the system is pretty straightforward, you just connect your devices to power sources and the TP-Link Deco app will take you to step by step through the process with its clear interface and explanative nature. It takes a little time and after that, you can start using it.

One of the biggest selling points of the device is its HomeCare package, that includes amazing features such as Parental Controls that you can control the pages that your children can browse or not, the Antivirus which protects your devices against any threat and the QoS solutions.

If you are concerned whether this system can provide stable and fast WiFi for your house, have no fear, because the TP-Link Deco M9 Plus delivers exemplary speeds for all your devices regardless of the range or the construction of your house. Downloading and uploading was a joy and it delivered pretty fast speeds that I didn’t expect from these small devices.

2. Linksys Velop

Best For Heavy Loads

Our Ratings:

The Linksys Velop is one of the best mesh WiFi systems in the market, incorporating lightning fast internet speeds, great coverage, and the ability to carry heavy loads like a breeze. You can’t essentially beat this system, which has a fine design and attention to detail, and the connection between each satellite is seamless, and you can roam from a satellite to a satellite without logging in to another one, as the whole system is automated.

However, this system comes at a high-price, and this may deter some buyers from the setup, but if you can afford it, it will please you with its entirety.

The Linksys Velop can also be bought as a single router, and also in a three-pack, but I would recommend you to opt for the two-pack as it delivers the most value for its price, and unless you have a fairly large house, three would be an overkill as the two-pack delivers plenty of range, of up to 4000 square foot.

The routers look pretty good, sporting a rectangular body that has a good build quality with its matte white finish on its plastic body that stands about 7.3-inches tall, and its base is also pretty good coated with a grey rubber delivering exceptional stability and looks. I would compare its design with the aforementioned Netgear Orbi, but it is even better because it is smaller, and it fits in more to spaces.

The initial setup of the system is extremely easy and is done like a breeze, as the Lynksys smartphone app takes you through the whole process step by step, a very detailed and thorough walkthrough, haven’t seen anything quite like it. The whole process will take about 15 minutes at maximum, and the system automatically installs firmware updates when it doesn’t sense-data communication, most of the time in the middle of the night.

With their tri-band dual-stream router settings with MU-MIMO support, that is simply explained the most advanced and latest WiFi tech, the Linksys Velop delivers speeds faster than normal routers while still providing further coverage. Through all the test that I carried the Linksys Velop provided astounding speeds, even when I stretched the range, placed it behind thick walls and such, there was no sign of slowing down and heavy throughput was exemplary.

1. Google WiFi

Best Overall

Our Ratings:

Durability

Quality

The top of the crop for the mesh WiFi systems comes with Google WiFi, which is essentially the easiest to use and the most customizable system that I have ever seen. The three-pack also delivers excellent value for the price, and besides that, it offers mighty power, and amazing coverage even in larger houses. It is the fastest to set up and has an amazing design, on top of that it also offers tons of features and it is the very best.

First off the Google WiFi, not counting its performance and coverage, it has the best design in the market, with its short cylindrical shape that is compact and white plastic body, with a white LED band in the centre of it. Each unit has the same design and has the same function, meaning that there is no hub unit, and each one is a node that works as a core router, it is worth mentioning that they are powered by USB Type-C cables.

Each device has a diameter of about 4.1-inches and a height of about 2.7-inches while weighing a light 340 grams in total. This means that you can store them in tiny corners of your house, or even set them on top of counters as they will not be an eyesore. As I mentioned earlier the initial setup is very fast and it is done in an instant thanks to the smartphone app, and its use of QR codes that you’ll find on the back of the nodes, so you just follow the step by step process until its complete.

The app is very useful as it offers you tons of functions, like the ability to monitor your network and its devices, a speed test for your connection, and WiFi test for connection strength. Not an extreme amount of controls but they deliver plenty and everybody can use them comfortably without needing too much knowledge about tech and tech jargon.

With speeds that will keep the whole family happy, this WiFi mesh system will provide coverage to every single corner of your house with the same speeds and it is one of the best additions to your smart home devices.
