Which Is The Best Portable Photo Printer?
5. Kodak Mini 2
We are going to start our best portable photo printers with a product from Kodak. Physical photographs have ceased from existence in the last few years as everything is digitalized, however, nothing can replace the feeling of nostalgia from a physical photograph and exploring an album. If you are a nostalgic person that is kinda stuck in time and still wants to relive moments in a physical manner, a portable photo printer is the most convenient option. The Kodak Mini 2 delivers an excellent package, with its small size, ease of use, fast set up, great functionality with mobile devices thanks to its app, and colourful print quality makes the device an amazing device.
The Kodak Mini 2 comes in a pretty compact shape, measuring just 1x3x5.2-inches in total and weighing a lightweight 8.4-inches. The device is available in a good range of paint jobs consisting of Black, White, Blue, Pink, and Purple so you can find the best one to suit your style. Thanks to its size, you can easily pocket it and carry it around anywhere without feeling it at all, it is also worth mentioning that this contemporary look is also extremely durable and slip-resistant.
There are no complicated controls on the device just a power button and a micro USB port for charging the printer, and it looks like a premium device. It has a built-in 620mAh lithium battery, that lasts for about 15 prints, which is pretty good for the size of the device.
My favourite part of this printer is its amazing connectivity and the Kodak companion app, that is available for both Android and iOS mobile devices. It has a pretty clean interface, giving you plenty of possibilities when it comes to editing and adjusting the print, and you get some great templates that allow you to print business and greeting cards, or just add some decorative frames.
The print speed of the Kodak Mini 2 is respectable as it can print a picture in just 1 minute and 15 seconds, for 2.1×3.4-inch photos, and it does it wirelessly thanks to its amazing NFC connectivity. To achieve the aforementioned amazing colors the Kodak Mini 2 utilizes a 4 pass D2T2 Dye Transfer method, that delivers amazing vibrancy and detail.
If you care about your colours, the Kodak Mini 2 is your best bet.
4. Fujifilm Instax SP-3
Fujifilm is one of the leading brands in all things photography, as it delivers the best cameras in the market, and the Instax SP-3 brings the retro lovers back to the scene. This portable photo printer delivers the cool retro experience that we’ve come to know and love, with amazing ease of use that works like a breeze with smartphones and rocks a pretty beautiful design that will further impress your friends and family.
The Fujifilm Instax SP-3 has a pretty attractive design that rocks a gem-cut look with aggressive angles that create a soothing look on top of its soft plastic.
However, despite being made from plastic this device rocks a pretty high-quality build, and it is expertly constructed with no afterthoughts, but then again nothing less is expected at the price point of this device, considering that it has a premium price tag. Everything about the design feels nice and it can easily slip into your backpack without any worry as it measures 6.1×6.1×3.7-inches in total and weighs just 1.3 pounds, not the tiniest of the devices but will get the job done.
This particular model functions with a rechargeable battery, which is an excellent choice as some devices use non-rechargeable batteries that need to be replaced. You will spot some LED lights on top of the printer that shows you how many shots you have left before needing a recharge, which adds to the convenience, and on top of that, you have the Reprint button that allows you to print the same image multiple times without having to go through the process.
The companion app delivers many functionalities and it has a history of all the printed photos so you can keep track, and reprint earlier photos, also I noticed that the interface is very attractive and intuitive.
The print size from this device is in square format measuring 2.4×2.4-inches and it delivers a resolution of about 800×800 resulting in 318 dots per inch, which is amazing and you will notice it from the quality and vibrancy of the colours. The detail reproduction is second to none and it manages to do so in tremendous speeds of about 13 seconds for a print.
3. Kodak Mini Shot
Portable photo printers are amazing devices, however, to take things to another level Kodak has brought a camera to the equation as well with the Kodak Mini Shot. This combines the functions of instant cameras and portable printers in the same body to deliver ample fun and a great experience into a retro-styled device that looks contemporary and vintage at the same time, hipsters will be delighted.
First of all, I have to mention that this device comes in different full of fun finishes such as Blue, Yellow, Pink, Purple and the more classic Black and White if you are a more understated person. The whole device is pretty small and measures just 0.9x3x5.2-inches in total and is a lightweight 0.5-pounds so you can easily slide it into your pocket.
On top of the device you will find the large shutter, and right next to it the power button and on the back panel you will spot the small LCD display, and a set of buttons that let you select and print photos. However, there is no way to save photos on the device for later printing, which was a little annoying and inconvenient.
If I could change one thing about the design of this device I would choose add a viewfinder, because the 1.7-inch small display doesn’t show any kind of detail and you certainly can’t recognize if your subject is in focus, and it takes a while for the display to refresh if you move the camera, and the battery life is a little on the weak side and after four or five shots you will need to recharge it.
The print quality from the Kodak Mini Shot is pretty decent actually, it delivers excellently saturated photos in the 2.1×3.4-inch format at 10MP quality, and with the Bluetooth connectivity, you can print photos from your smartphone at the touch of a button. The printing process lasts about 30 seconds in total, which is pretty good actually. The app delivers you a wide range of customization and filters to your photos before printing.
If you want a versatile portable photo printer, the Kodak Mini Shot is the answer.
2. Polaroid Mint
Instagram has changed the photo game forever, with its vintage and polaroid style filters, the app has changed by now, but the craze is still there as more and more hipsters are obsessed with the retro vintage styling. Polaroid has also touched on the trend and has become a synonym for vintage and retro, with the Polaroid Mint Pocket Printer, you can please your inner hipster in a breeze. This device brings amazing qualities in an ultra-portable package, coming in with a powerful battery, and the best photo quality from a photo printer.
First off, I have to say that the Polaroid Mint is really pocket-sized measuring about 4.5x3x0.7-inches in total and weighs a lightweight 7.2-ounces, smaller than most smartphones and about the same weight, so you can easily slide it in your back pocket. It has a pretty simple design with the Polaroid logo engraved on its plastic body, and it is worth mentioning that it comes in various paint jobs, consisting of Black, Blue, Yellow, Red, and White. It is amazing because it can house 50 print-sheets at full capacity, but this adds to the weight of the device, however, it doesn’t hinder its portability.
One of the biggest selling points of this device is its 900mAh battery that is rechargeable via the USB charging port, and it has an amazing run time. It can print about 40 photos give or take before shutting down, however, you should be careful about the stand-by battery life because it lasts only a couple weeks.
The device utilizes Zink Zero Ink Paper that can be slid easily into the printer and you don’t need to replace ink cartridges because it has none of them. The wireless connectivity of the Polaroid Mint is excellent as it can connect easily to your phone and you can print through the companion app in a breeze, the device also can lodge a microSD card up to 256GB meaning that you can easily store photos in it.
The print size is the standard 2×3-inches and it prints the definite best photos, not just retro-styled photos with grain and vignette, near-professional quality photos with amazing detail colour and contrast.
1. HP X7N07A
The best portable printer in the market comes from the printing giant HP which is the most experienced brand in that segment, the HP X7N07A Sprocket. It is a pretty small and portable device, with very easy to use functions, quick print speed, integration with Facebook and Instagram and tons of other features that will make your life easier.
As the Polaroid Mint, the HP X7N07A as well utilizes Zink sheets to print photos without the use of ink cartridges, it completes the function by the heat of the thermal print head to give colors and details and it does it conveniently.
In the design department, the HP Sprocket is a very well made machine with sleek lines and an aesthetic look. It has rounded corners to complete the portable package that measures 0.9x3x4.5-inches and weighs just 6 ounces in total, so you can store in your jacket pocket. The white plastic casing has copper details around the body and the HP logo in the middle of it. There are minimal controls on the device, just the power button and the USB port for charging the device, however, connectivity is only limited to Bluetooth, it would be nice to be able to connect it to a PC.
The printer works via the HP Sprocket app that as I mentioned earlier has Facebook and Instagram integration so you can easily print from your social media accounts. Editing and printing photos from the app are pretty speedy and you can do it in a breeze as it has no learning curve and it is definitely fool-proof.
The print speed of the device is decent as it can output a photo in just 42 seconds, which is the category average, it could be a little faster, but it does four passes to the sheet to output good quality photos.
The print quality of the device is pretty good and it outputs good detail, but not a lot of color, it could do better but I am extremely pleased with the retro vibe that it delivers.
Taking the price into consideration, the HP X7N07A Sprocket delivers tremendous value for the price, it has no competition in this category. Definitely one of the best portable photo printers out there.
